Supply & fit of the only replica Victorian upvc Windows and Doors recommended by restorers.

Hi, my name is Alan Denyer - the owner of AWD Restorations, based in Earlsdon, Coventry..

Alan Denyer, owner of AWD, gives a short intro -

We’ve been restoring all kinds of homes for many years now, including our own properties - and my advice to homeowners always is, if you’re thinking about how to save energy and improve looks - then replacement sash or casement windows should be top of the list.

After painstakingly repairing hundreds of timber sash windows during my time as a renovation specialist - we started looking at alternatives. I’d been aware of the benefits of upvc over timber as a material - low cost, energy efficiency, zero maintenance - however it took a long time to source a fabricator we were happy with as the detailing had to be right.

I’ve been specifying these units now since 2012, and love the quality - they really are great value Victorian replica windows, and can be made up and delivered within 3 weeks. Everything comes with a 20 year guarantee - and with hundreds of designs and colours to choose from - we can help you find the best ‘look’ for your property.

We call these windows the ‘Heritage Range’ - and there’s a selection of composite doors we’ve also sourced to compliment your choice. My intention with this website is to show you how they can make a difference to your home..

'Love the new windows - they've transformed my property'.

Mrs Benjamin’s gorgeous house is shown above - we installed sash windows throughout, in 2015 - see more pics HERE.

We also love this more recent customer installation from 2017 (images below) - it’s a property in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

We recommended ‘3 over 2’ sash replacement windows - based on our experience of other homes built in a similar style - and finished the job inside with stylish Victorian replica architrave mouldings to give everything a touch of elegance.

ELEGANT

Beautifully proportioned to look just like Edwardian or Victorian originals, and available in some great period colours.

PRACTICAL

Using the latest advances in technology - argon filled low e glass - these will keep you toasty warm in winter!

GREAT VALUE

If you still have original windows - but want to upgrade - these slimline replacement units can be be fitted snugly inside the existing sashbox. It looks better this way - and saves the expensive ‘making good’ add-on’s many other suppliers will quote you (or just leave you to sort).

Introducing the heritage range..

Getting the right balance between cost, aethetics and practicality is a major challenge in the restoration business.

Our Heritage range windows are a great choice if you want to upgrade your period property - whether it's a changing original windows to something more ‘green’ - or just stripping out old-style double glazing to better match the age of the property..

If you've older double glazing, changing the units out for elegant new sliding sash windows will create such a difference that you'll hardly be able to believe your eyes - the moment a new window goes in is always the favorite part of our day!

And remember - ask any Estate Agent, re-fitting modern sash windows that faithfully replicate the Victorian or Edwardian originals will easily add to your house's value.

A snowy 'Hermitage', in Ansty, Warwickshire back in 2011 - with elegant original sash windows, but eye-watering heating bills.

The property in 2015, now, with new 'A' rated replica sash windows fitted by us - same elegant looks, but cosy and warm this winter.

We love Heritage Range because the frames are relatively slender, so for the first time it's possible to replace original single glazed sash windows without removing the sashbox - that's the big thing with nice mouldings on it that surrounds original windows, housing the weights - improving looks and reducing costs (the image gallery below shows a cottage in Dudley in various stages of completion, with new window units fitted directly into the old sashboxes).

And finally, on top of being the best choice to keep costs down, as we said earlier - we've realised upvc is actually a better option than timber. We agree - in the old days it wasn’t a great choice for period homes, but now, with great colours, an authentic finish and super detailing - in our opinion, there's no contest.

PS. What are my options for stained glass..?

If you’ve original windows with stained glass, our advice is to avoid trying to build this into new windows as it never works satisfactorily - modern ‘painted on’ replica stained glass with stick on lead beading isn’t a patch on Victorian or Edwardian originals. An alternative approach we’ve seen is to remove the glass panels, then hang them on the inside of the window like decorative art - you get a very similar effect.

A Victorian Mansion gets a Cream Makeover

This large property, converted into 10 luxury 2 bed apartments, retained it's original sash windows in a reasonable - recently refurbished - condition. However, occasional condensation, poor insulation and ongoing maintenance costs were perceived to be a problem.

AWD Restorations were invited to install 42 individual upvc Heritage Range Sliding Sash and 5 upvc Heritage Range Casement windows to the property in 2013, in consultation with the local Conservation Officer.

The units were specified so as to provide a 'like for like' replacement for the original, requiring the larger bay windows to be manufactured with a 40/60 centre rail separation, the remainder 50/50. We recommended 'cream' as the exterior colour  - one of 8 standard colours available with the Heritage Range. Window interiors were supplied as smooth white to compliment the interior decorating scheme.

The slimline proportions of Heritage Range allow for installation directly into the original sash box - as seen here at Davenport Road - this approach minimises fitting time, however, more significantly, provides for an authentic period look both inside and out.

All windows were specified A-energy rated and supplied with trickle ventilation plus the practical 'tilt-to-clean' feature.

New and old comparision - windows installed directly into original sash boxes to preserve period character - at the time of this photo, the first floor right hand side had yet to be fitted with Heritage Range.

Ex-Vicarage transformed into quiet, cosy nest

This period gem included seventeen original sash windows; functional, but looking a little jaded. Peeling paint, draughts, heat loss and traffic noise were all perceived problems in need of a solution.

We recommended upvc Heritage Windows with a Cream finish for all the exteriors, and smooth white internally - and replicated the upper sash pane configurations to authentically match the originals. The Heritage Range is particularly well suited here, as many windows feature a distinctive 'three over one' glass arrangement requiring thin - astragal bar - period detailing to replicate the original glazing, all available as standard on Heritage Windows.

High efficiency A rated argon filled low-e glass units were supplied together with lockable high security sash catches - in an authentic period style -. finished in brushed satin to compliment the integral bottom sash lifters and upper sash pull handle.

Exposed sash box detailing on the outside is painted with Dulux Heritage Cream to mirror the upvc window colouring, with original cills re-faced to match.
